New garage door installation

New garage door installation costs $1,000 to $4,000 including removal of the old door, with most single-car doors landing between $1,000 and $1,800 and insulated two-car doors between $1,800 and $3,200.

A wind-rated door is not just a thicker skin. Horizontal struts across every section, heavier hinges and reinforced track brackets are what carry the pressure load — and what the inspector checks.

What actually drives the price

Insulation. A single-layer steel door is the cheapest; a three-layer insulated door with a steel back adds $600 to $1,400 and is worth it if the garage shares a wall or ceiling with living space.

Material. Steel is the default. Wood and wood-composite doors cost two to four times more and need refinishing. Aluminium and glass are premium.

Wind rating. In coastal counties this is not optional — see the wind code section below.

Windows, insulated glass and decorative hardware, which add $200 to $800.

Wind rating and permits

In Florida's High-Velocity Hurricane Zone — Miami-Dade and Broward counties — every garage door must carry a Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance and a large-missile impact rating, whether or not it has windows. Coastal design wind speeds run 150 mph and above.

Elsewhere in Florida and in coastal Texas, a Florida Product Approval number or equivalent wind rating is required and enforced at inspection.

Most jurisdictions require a permit for full door replacement, typically $500 to $1,200 in HVHZ counties with a 15 to 30 business day review, and considerably less elsewhere. Repairs and spring replacement are normally exempt.

Should you do this yourself?

No. Beyond the spring tension involved, an incorrectly installed door is a structural and safety problem, and most manufacturer warranties are void without professional installation.

Common questions

How much does a new garage door cost installed?

$1,000 to $4,000 including removal of the old door. Single-car doors typically run $1,000 to $1,800; insulated two-car doors $1,800 to $3,200. Wind-rated doors in coastal counties cost more.

Do I need a permit to replace a garage door?

In most jurisdictions yes, because the door is part of the building envelope. In Florida's HVHZ counties permits run $500 to $1,200 with a 15 to 30 business day review. Repairs and spring replacement are normally exempt.
