Garage door wind code by county
Garage door wind rating requirements are set by county, not by state. Design wind speeds under ASCE 7 range from about 105 mph inland to 175 mph on the South Florida coast, and in Florida's High-Velocity Hurricane Zone every garage door must additionally carry a Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance and a large-missile impact rating.

The garage door is usually the weakest point in the envelope
A double garage door is the largest single opening in most houses. When it fails under wind pressure, the building interior is suddenly pressurised, which is what lifts roofs off. This is why codes single garage doors out for specific rating requirements.
A wind-rated door is not simply thicker steel. It requires horizontal reinforcement struts across every section, heavier-gauge hinges, and reinforced track brackets anchored into the structure. Expect roughly 20 to 40 percent over a standard door.
High-Velocity Hurricane Zone rules are stricter than the rest of Florida
In Miami-Dade and Broward, every garage door must carry a Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance and pass a large-missile impact test — whether or not the door has windows. A Florida Product Approval alone is not sufficient in these two counties.
Permits for full door replacement in HVHZ jurisdictions typically run $500 to $1,200 with a 15 to 30 business day plan review, so the calendar matters as much as the cost. Repairs and spring replacement are normally exempt.
